Random ramblings

I cannot believe the last time I did a "random ramblings" post was way back in May of 2010. Since I have a handful of things (and by handful, I mean at least 10) on my mind and not any one thing heavily weighing me down, I figured I might as well ramble. So here goes.

  • Earlier today, the weather people were calling for 3 to 6 inches of snow, with the snow to start in the mid afternoon and one of those inches coming before midnight. I cannot speak for the rest of the Pittsburgh area, but we have gotten at least three inches so far, at around 10 p.m. Brian has twice shoveled our driveway and sidewalks as well as our neighbor's, and each time everything was covered by the time he finished.
  • Speaking of snow, I am scheduled to substitute tomorrow, which also happens to be "Steelers Dress-Down Day." I will be so bummed if I don't get to wear my Hines Ward jersey while teaching, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will have only a two-hour delay (already called).
  • And speaking of subbing, once you are a grown-up and have learned a lot of things, it is often funny to hear the perceptions and beliefs of young kids. The third graders I subbed today worked on a science experiment about day and night. Several of the kids thought that the sun went underground at night, which probably sounds funny to anyone reading this, but is it that silly for someone so young to think that?
  • I had a job interview this week, my first since October. I may share some details later, but in the meantime, I am happy to say I felt comfortable and I think it went well. I don't necessarily think I will get the position, and I am not even sure it is right for me, but if nothing else, it was good to get the experience.
  • Are you ready for some football?! I was crazy-nervous last Saturday for the Steelers-Ravens game and was very glad I had the Pens game earlier in the day to distract me. What highs and lows! Hopefully, the game Sunday will be as exciting, but I won't be too disappointed if the Steelers cool the Jets handily. And if they lose? As I said last week, I expect to get over it pretty quickly.
  • Glad Pitt finally has a(nother) new football coach. I was a bit disappointed that Tom Bradley (PSU defensive coach) did not get the job, even though WTAE erroneously reported he did, but hopefully this Todd Graham will work out.
  • Here is hoping that PA's new governor does a good job, for all our sakes.
  • I feel for many people who have suffered various tragedies lately, from the mudslides in Brazil, to the shootings in AZ, to the upheaval in Tunisia.
  • And on that note, I wish all of you safe travels as well as kindness and compassion (both to receive and to give).
Peace. Out.

I know what you mean about the "experience" in the job interview thing...... Sometimes, I don't really want the job, but... I'm glad they liked me or I'm glad I did well.... whatever. Anyway - sounds like you're subbing a lot, which is nice, right?

Funny thing about the snow on Friday... I hate shoveling - HATE IT! But so far this winter, my driveway has been hit or miss with the snow - it must be facing a direction that the way the wind blows, it just blows the snow right out of the driveway. But the homes on the next street over get a lor of snow in their driveways... Anyway, I was sure I would have so much snow on Friday morning - nope! Didn't even need to get out the shovel! ha ha! And they still canceled school!

What a year 2021 has been (Day 7)

I have almost no words for what happened yesterday at the Capitol. Protesting is one thing (though I truly think it is and has been time to move on). But to storm the Capitol? A friend on Facebook said, quite simply, " Almost 20 years ago a group of people on an airplane sacrificed themselves to protect the Capitol. How far we have fallen!" Indeed. And, yes, it IS storming the Capitol. I have seen numerous videos of people knocking down barricades/fences, pushing police officers, and breaking windows and climbing through them. That is beyond protesting. And even if a protestor did not do those things, if they followed those seditionists past those barricades and into the building, they are just as guilty. I did not support the violent protests this summer that resulted in damages to businesses and public property (I was in full support of the actual protests). But I also acknowledged as a white person, I cannot truly put myself in the position of a black person who is angry a

Melancholy and Gratitude

A few days ago, I decided to do gratitude posts on FB. I was good the first two days. Day 3 I got a little snarky as I posted about "doing the right thing" in regards to Covid. The Covid cases in Allegheny County have been on the rise. For a while, we had daily counts between 50 and 100. After July 4, we saw a spike for a few weeks, and then cases were back below 100. Unfortunately, other than one "low" day this week, where "only" 288 cases were reported, we have had between 500 and 620 daily cases. Fortunately, only a few people have died this week. But of course, any death is too many. I started to keep track of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations on 6/12/20. On that day, since 3/12, Allegheny County had had 2,034 cases, 352 people had been hospitalized, and 172 people had died. On 11/19/20, the county has seen a total of 22,042 cases, 1,724 people have been hospitalized, and 465 people have died from Covid since 3/12. In just over 8 months, we have had

Hug your loved ones!

I hate to say that I am still working through my grief. I mean, in some ways I can imagine I will always be grieving. But I feel pretty confident it will get easier, and I will cry less and less. But, yeah, I guess I am still working through it. Yesterday, a thought occurred to me: I had not hugged my dad since the end of February, and that will now be the last time I ever did. I did not see him for almost three months because of COVID, and then at the end of May, he started his series of hospital visits with skilled nursing stints in between. I was always afraid to hug him then. What if I gave him COVID? And yet when my dad had really bad ICU delirium during a few different hospital stays, I fed him. If I could do that, why not hug him? So I cried a bit last night thinking about that. I am not necessarily a big hugger; I used to hate it, and then probably before Jordan was born, I got back to doing it again. Before COVID, I hugged my friends goodbye (and sometimes hello). I always wou
