I'm far more disappointed than she is

Just three short weeks ago, I wrote a post about vacations. After a three-year hiatus, we were finally going to leave the Burgh to get away for three nights. We spent a lot of yesterday packing and organizing, which I actually started Friday night (how can it take so long?!). Then, while I was working on my online class, I received an email from the Stonewall Resort informing me that the resort could not accept Saturday's reservations due to a power outage. I ran downstairs to tell Brian, who was listening to the Pirates beat up on St. Louis. He was not happy. I immediately went on Facebook (where, seriously, I get a lot of my news) to the resort's page, and read some comments from people. The resort updated their page soon after.

I spent a lot of yesterday evening checking FB and the resort web page, and doing internet searches to determine when power was going to be restored (someone on FB who had left the resort said that power was expected to be down for five days). I posted a comment on the resort's FB page and sent an email telling them since I had to kennel my dog at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and leave at 10:30 to make my early afternoon spa appointment at the resort, I needed to know by 9 a.m. I went to bed around midnight now knowing if we would be heading to WV this morning.

After a restless night of sleep, I checked my email and the FB page at about 7:30. Still no word. I was trying to convince myself that no news was good news. But based on the late response yesterday, I was not feeling particularly optimistic. Then, at 8:30 a.m. I received an email reply from someone at the resort, informing me that, "We still do not have power or phones and we will be closed today. We apologize for the inconvenience."

I felt so sad. I broke the news to J, who was a little disappointed. I immediately went back on the computer and tried to figure out an alternative destination. After a few searches and a phone call, I decided I did not want to pay the same amount for three waterpark passes and one night at a hotel at Erie as I was going to for three nights at the Stonewall. I called up the Pet Hotel to cancel Sadie's stay.

I have been on FB and the resort website since, and they have yet to update either. Had I not emailed the resort and that person replied, we might have been on our way. I understand the storm and resulting power outage was out of their control, and for all I know we could have been in that storm, so it could always be worse. But I am still disappointed. Hopefully like a Penguins or Steelers playoff loss, it will go away after a day or two.

But on a positive note, we get to spend the day with Sadie, whom we adopted 10 years ago today. There is that! The four of us (including) Sadie are headed to the park for a picnic. Not sure how long we are going to last in the heat, but I know my kid is looking forward to it. So that is pretty much all that matter. Almost, anyway.

Aw that is so disappointing. Sorry your vacation is ruined. Maybe you will get a free night out it and can go another time? Keep your head up.

So sorry about your vacation plans going all KERBLOOEY.

I would have put some info on FB, but I couldn't because my power was out too. Just came back this morning. I've never seen such a vicious storm, so far inland.

Thanks, LaLa and Bluz. I feel a little better now that we went out for a bit.

LaLa: I am not sure if we will be able to swing another time. Hubby is on call 2/4 weeks a month, which means we have only two other weeks to pick from before the kid goes back to school. Plus hubs has to take another week off, which will leave him just one more for the rest of the year (and that includes sick time). If the resort does not give us some good discount (we had buy 2 nights, get 1 free), we definitely won't go back.

Bluz: I did not realize how widespread the outage was. Hope you were not too hot!

What a year 2021 has been (Day 7)

I have almost no words for what happened yesterday at the Capitol. Protesting is one thing (though I truly think it is and has been time to move on). But to storm the Capitol? A friend on Facebook said, quite simply, " Almost 20 years ago a group of people on an airplane sacrificed themselves to protect the Capitol. How far we have fallen!" Indeed. And, yes, it IS storming the Capitol. I have seen numerous videos of people knocking down barricades/fences, pushing police officers, and breaking windows and climbing through them. That is beyond protesting. And even if a protestor did not do those things, if they followed those seditionists past those barricades and into the building, they are just as guilty. I did not support the violent protests this summer that resulted in damages to businesses and public property (I was in full support of the actual protests). But I also acknowledged as a white person, I cannot truly put myself in the position of a black person who is angry a

Melancholy and Gratitude

A few days ago, I decided to do gratitude posts on FB. I was good the first two days. Day 3 I got a little snarky as I posted about "doing the right thing" in regards to Covid. The Covid cases in Allegheny County have been on the rise. For a while, we had daily counts between 50 and 100. After July 4, we saw a spike for a few weeks, and then cases were back below 100. Unfortunately, other than one "low" day this week, where "only" 288 cases were reported, we have had between 500 and 620 daily cases. Fortunately, only a few people have died this week. But of course, any death is too many. I started to keep track of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations on 6/12/20. On that day, since 3/12, Allegheny County had had 2,034 cases, 352 people had been hospitalized, and 172 people had died. On 11/19/20, the county has seen a total of 22,042 cases, 1,724 people have been hospitalized, and 465 people have died from Covid since 3/12. In just over 8 months, we have had

Hug your loved ones!

I hate to say that I am still working through my grief. I mean, in some ways I can imagine I will always be grieving. But I feel pretty confident it will get easier, and I will cry less and less. But, yeah, I guess I am still working through it. Yesterday, a thought occurred to me: I had not hugged my dad since the end of February, and that will now be the last time I ever did. I did not see him for almost three months because of COVID, and then at the end of May, he started his series of hospital visits with skilled nursing stints in between. I was always afraid to hug him then. What if I gave him COVID? And yet when my dad had really bad ICU delirium during a few different hospital stays, I fed him. If I could do that, why not hug him? So I cried a bit last night thinking about that. I am not necessarily a big hugger; I used to hate it, and then probably before Jordan was born, I got back to doing it again. Before COVID, I hugged my friends goodbye (and sometimes hello). I always wou
