Water and sun

I thought I would post some pics from a quick trip to Erie I took with the kid and my mom in August. I can never take or have enough pictures of the water and the sun.
This is the kid in the water.
The water was really cold, which I thought it might not be as bad since it was just past mid August. But that did not stop the kid from swimming. Me? I made it to thigh deep water and chickened out.

One of the coolest thing about the Bicentennial Tower was there were hundreds, maybe even thousands, of bricks engraved with people's names, scattered along the walkway that you see in the photo above as well as in and around the Tower building. After we came back down from the top of the tower, we got ice cream. And I was sitting there eating, I happened to notice a brick with the names of a family whose kids go to my kid's school. Small world, I say.

I really enjoyed our time at the Thomas Ridge Environmental Center (TREC).

The kid and I trekked up the many flights of stairs to see the view from the top of the tower.

You can make out the roller coaster in the pics above. J and I went on that coaster, when the three of us made a brief stop at Waldameer Park. I can tell you that that coaster was the scariest one I have been on in my adult life. We were up so high and going so fast. I was practically freaking out as we soared over Lake Erie.

There was a lot of informational and education displays at the TREC. Well worth the hour or so we spent there. Wish we had had more time.

All in all, the three of us had a great time. It was a short trip; we were there less than 48 hours, but it was nice escape. I look forward to next summer, when I will actually have more than a couple of vacation days earned (knock on wood that I don't need to take them for anything before then) so we can take a much-needed and deserved family vacation.

Lovely! The pink sunset one is insane. And I imagine you didn't even Photoshop these to bring out the colors, which makes them insaner.

Yes, yes, they are, Bluz.

Katie, those pics were right from the iPhone 4. Of course I can't get a decent pic in the dark, but daylight and apparently sunsets work well. :-)

Summer in review

This summer I made it a point to try to take at least one pic of Jordan whenever we went somewhere, which most often was a park. I wanted to capture all the great, fun things we did this summer, knowing that it was probably going to be my last summer not working for quite some time. So here goes. I have expressed my love of Frick Park, particularly Blue Slide Park, in other posts ; it really is one of our favorites. And this summer marked the first one I did not feel the need to follow J around like a little puppy dog. I actually let her run around and explore, though, admittedly, I would panic if more than three minutes went by and I had not seen her. In the pics above, J is at the end of the blue slide, and then hanging several feet above concrete (which scared the crap out of me). We also visited another section of Frick Park, the area on the corner of Braddock and Forbes, a few times. There is not as much to do as Blue Slide, but we go there to mix things up a bit. If only I had taken pictures of my detoured drive

When I moved to the Burgh just over 14 years ago, I had a lot of anxiety about getting from "here" to "there." I found the city, which is triangular, and even some of the suburbs quite confusing. On top of that, a lot of the signs were of little help. Clearly they were put up by either natives who had no need for directions or people with a sick sense of humor who thought it would be funny to put signs in random places, leaving off important roads. At some point, I got over that fear of driving to a new building downtown. I don't recall when it happened, but eventually I just figured most of the city out; and when I had to head to a new place, I just drove around, no longer with a feeling of dread, knowing I would eventually get there. But on Sunday morning, that awful, long-ago feeling returned, thanks to the closure of the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnels. I had to pick my mother up from the airport, so there was no avoiding it.
