You win some, you lose some

The party's over.

I was not really expecting my team, even with all the injuries, to lose to an 8-8 team with a QB who was a horrible passer. But maybe God really was on Tebow's side (I say that with some sense of seriousness; see my last paragraph). But I mostly believe that God could care less about sports, bands, movies, etc. I am pretty sure He has enough other things to keep track of. And let's face it: a lot of rich, famous people are rather crappy people, and I kind of doubt God would want to reward that kind of behavior with a #1 movie, album, or Super Bowl victory.

But what do I know?

Well, I know that the Steeler season is over, not even halfway through what is typically the worst month of winter here in southwestern PA. And unlike last year, I don't get to look forward to watching football into February. There is no more planning weekend activities around Steeler games. No excitement in thinking that my team could be hoisting another Lombardi trophy through the streets of Pittsburgh in another month. No more wearing my jersey on "Steeler Fridays" or game day (and, definitely no more wearing it to church, unless it is Super Bowl Sunday).

I am disappointed for sure. And that last play was really like a punch in the gut. But fortunately it was over quickly, which maybe made it easier to swallow (once it actually set in that my team lost on the first play in OT, after staging a comeback in the second half).

And, even though I think the Broncos are going to get blown out by New England, I am going to route for Tebow and company anyway. That would make yesterday's loss, at least for me, a little easier to take. But more than that, why not route for an openly religious guy who seems like a decent human being? I find it interesting that so many people criticized Big Ben for all the stuff he did (and rightly so), and yet so many others (surely not the same people) are now criticizing Tebow for including Jesus in his football life. Even if I don't exactly share his beliefs and I personally am uncomfortable being openly religious, I find his demeanor rather refreshing.

Speaking of which, I came across this interesting tidbit: Tim Tebow threw for 316 yards and averaged 31.6 yards per pass during the game last night. Tebow's favorite Bible verse is John 3:16. Coincidence? Not for me to say.

Good/interesting point about Tebow vs Ben (and all the other jerks out there). Don't know much about him. But you have me intrigued. Sorry about your Steelers.

Time to concentrate on the Penguins now... IF there are any left that are well enough to skate...

I have to hold my nose and root for the Patriots... I think they have the best chance to beat the Ravens, who cannot be allowed to defile the Lombardi Trophy again.

LaLa: I thought it was a good point too! Thanks for your sympathy.

Bluz: I originally ended my post with a "Go, Pens!" but I took it out. That is what made the Steelers loss even harder to swallow--I just can't see the injury-plagued Pens going far in the playoffs at all (and dare I even say miss them). I can't root for either the Pats or Ravens. Here's hoping Green Bay takes it all again.

Why do they stand up there and say that when they are just lying?

That extra-long title is courtesy of my nine-year-old and was something she uttered during "Say Yes to the Dress" on Friday evening. I watch very little reality TV, but I make an exception for this show because I like to look at the dresses. And sometimes, the stories are heart-warming. Typically at the end of the show, a snippet of a wedding is aired. In this particular show, a woman who was confined to a wheelchair was exchanging vows with her fiance. After the two of them finished, J made her comment. I asked her what she meant as I must have been on the computer while the TV was on, and she explained that because so many people just get divorced, why do they even say "as long as we both shall live"? That is tough one, kid. I tried with what I thought was a sound explanation: Most of the people who get married truly believe they will be together the rest of their lives, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. But if you don't think that you will be ...

What a year 2021 has been (Day 7)

I have almost no words for what happened yesterday at the Capitol. Protesting is one thing (though I truly think it is and has been time to move on). But to storm the Capitol? A friend on Facebook said, quite simply, " Almost 20 years ago a group of people on an airplane sacrificed themselves to protect the Capitol. How far we have fallen!" Indeed. And, yes, it IS storming the Capitol. I have seen numerous videos of people knocking down barricades/fences, pushing police officers, and breaking windows and climbing through them. That is beyond protesting. And even if a protestor did not do those things, if they followed those seditionists past those barricades and into the building, they are just as guilty. I did not support the violent protests this summer that resulted in damages to businesses and public property (I was in full support of the actual protests). But I also acknowledged as a white person, I cannot truly put myself in the position of a black person who is angry a...

A rambling gun rant

I have so many disjointed thoughts about guns in America right now. I am sad, sick, and angry about what happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last week. I hate that I have to talk to my high schooler about what to do if someone starts shooting in her school. I hate that when the hubs and I dropped her off at the movies last week, I was feeling uneasy as we told her to be aware of her surroundings and pay attention to where the exits are. I hate that my daughter has many unanswerable questions about how what happened actually happened. I hate that my 11-year-old nephew in TX is afraid to go to school because he is afraid of a shooting. I hate that nearly every day since that awful shooting, I have had to read about threats at various schools, instilling more fear in children. Over 5 years ago after the shooting in Newtown, I said that I still consider schools one of the safest places. Despite the fact that we seem to read about more and more school shootings, ...
