Remember how I complained that I used to be lucky, but then my luck kind of ran out? And then I wrote a follow-up post almost a year later, sharing how I did win a great prize, a photo shoot?
Since then, I have entered probably several dozen contests, including a trip to the zoo in which two lucky winners were selected. Only three people signed up for that contest (it was on a blog), and I happened not to be one of the two. Sheesh. I also tried to win one of the many PG prizes over the summer, spending probably $5 in postage. No luck there either.
But then, a few weeks ago, I entered a contest to win tickets to the Nutcracker. My odds were pretty good; I think only 13 people entered. And to further increase my odds, I entered the same contest on an affiliate site, where about as many people signed up.
I saw the Nutcracker when I was a kid, and I don't remember liking it all that much. But it was something I wanted to take J to, since she likes dancing, and I was pretty sure it had to be less boring about 30 year later. However, I am very under-employed, so there was no way I was going to shell out anywhere from $25 to $120 for a seat. So when the contest came along, I jumped at the chance. And luck finally tilted back in my direction, because we won, with great seats to boot. In fact, I actually won both contests, but I just went with the one.
We ended up taking one of J's classmates and her mother. All in all, I think everyone enjoyed it, but it was long; in fact, during the last 10 to 15 minutes, the girls asked more than once when it was going to be over. Down on sleep, I was close to nodding off towards the end, but not because it was not spectacular; it really was quite enjoyable. The costumes were lavish. The scenery seemed pretty cool (loved the falling snow). And the dancing was rather exquisite, with some entertaining acrobatics thrown in every now and again. I would suggest to anyone that they read the story before they go; wish I had thought of that so J would have had an understanding of what was going on (there is no dialogue).
The Nutcracker is not something I would go to every year, even if money were no object; I think things like that are best appreciated when you do them only once or twice. But I would consider taking J back when she is older if she wants, although the next production I really want to take her to is my favorite, Jesus Christ Superstar. Might wait until she is a few years older, though.
Until then, I will have visions of sugar plum and snow fairies dancing in my head. And I will have to remind myself of this win the next time I complain that I don't win anything. #Winning!
