What I am thankful for

In honor of Thanksgiving, I thought I would list all the things I thank God for, in no particular order after the first three, off the top of my head.

Happy Turkey Day!

  • My family (both my little family of three and my "original" family plus their spouses and especially my nieces and nephews)
  • My and my family's health (Jordan's 85th cold of the year notwithstanding)
  • My friends
  • The roof over my head that we can still afford to pay for
  • Food to eat
  • Cars that run and only one car payment
  • That Brian and I both still have our jobs
  • My obsession with money (that has kept us from spending what we don't have)
  • Having a flexible job
  • Jordan's school
  • My church, the choir, Fr. John
  • Penn State in the Rose Bowl
  • The Steelers at the top of their division
  • Celebrating a birthday lunch with friends every year at Mad Mex
  • Happy hour with friends
  • Just knowing I can go back to the gym next year
  • Having gained only 5 pounds in the last few months despite non-stop eating
  • Sweat pants and sweat shirts
  • The ability to give money to charity
  • Drew Brees as my fantasy football team quarterback
  • That Brian has not yet strangled Sadie
  • Our new HD flat-screen TV
  • The return of 24
  • Good beer
  • The chance to see my family in NC for Thanksgiving
  • Hope and optimism

I'm thankful for many of those same things. Never know when one of 'em might be yanked out from under you like a rug. Congrats on the apple tasting trophy and on making your kid smoke-phobic. ; )

I have to add two more things I am thankful for:
- that Jordan, my mom, and I made it to and from NC safely
- that the police officer who pulled me over for going 70 in a 55mph zone in NC (I really thought the speed limit was 70) decided to give me only a warning.

In that respect as well as being with my family, it was one of the best Thanksgivings.

Why do they stand up there and say that when they are just lying?

That extra-long title is courtesy of my nine-year-old and was something she uttered during "Say Yes to the Dress" on Friday evening. I watch very little reality TV, but I make an exception for this show because I like to look at the dresses. And sometimes, the stories are heart-warming. Typically at the end of the show, a snippet of a wedding is aired. In this particular show, a woman who was confined to a wheelchair was exchanging vows with her fiance. After the two of them finished, J made her comment. I asked her what she meant as I must have been on the computer while the TV was on, and she explained that because so many people just get divorced, why do they even say "as long as we both shall live"? What a year 2021 has been (Day 7)

I have almost no words for what happened yesterday at the Capitol. Protesting is one thing (though I truly think it is and has been time to move on). But to storm the Capitol? A friend on Facebook said, quite simply, " Almost 20 years ago a group of people on an airplane sacrificed themselves to protect the Capitol. How far we have fallen!" Indeed. And, yes, it IS storming the Capitol. I have seen numerous videos of people knocking down barricades/fences, pushing police officers, and breaking windows and climbing through them. That is beyond protesting. And even if a protestor did not do those things, if they followed those seditionists past those barricades and into the building, they are just as guilty. I did not support the violent protests this summer that resulted in damages to businesses and public property (I was in full support of the actual protests). A rambling gun rant

I have so many disjointed thoughts about guns in America right now. I am sad, sick, and angry about what happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last week. I hate that I have to talk to my high schooler about what to do if someone starts shooting in her school. I hate that when the hubs and I dropped her off at the movies last week, I was feeling uneasy as we told her to be aware of her surroundings and pay attention to where the exits are. I hate that my daughter has many unanswerable questions about how what happened actually happened. I hate that my 11-year-old nephew in TX is afraid to go to school because he is afraid of a shooting. I hate that nearly every day since that awful shooting, I have had to read about threats at various schools, instilling more fear in children.
